About Us

XuFancheng Culture Study Center is a research organization whose main focus is to promote the study and understanding of the cultural heritage of India and China. The center aims to provide a platform for scholars, students, and the general public to engage with the diverse cultural traditions of both countries. It offers academic courses, programs and research opportunities on India-China culture, as well as organizing cultural events and lectures. The center also serves as a resource center for the study of India-China culture, providing access to books, journals, and other materials. Additionally, the center aims to foster cultural exchange and cooperation between India and China by establishing partnerships with academic institutions and cultural organizations in both countries.

Center is named after the Chinese Sanskrit scholar Xu Fancheng.

The Center is named after the Chinese Sanskrit scholar Xu Fancheng. Prof Xu was a prominent figure in the field of Indology, and his work has made significant contributions to the study of Indian culture and its influence on China.

Xu Fancheng was a Chinese scholar, who was born in the early 20th century and was a pioneer in the study of Buddhism and Indian culture. He studied Sanskrit in India, and later on, he translated many important works of Indian literature, philosophy and religious texts into Chinese, making them accessible to a wider audience. He also wrote many important works on Indian Buddhism and the impact of Indian culture on China.

Naming the centre after Xu Fancheng would honour his contributions to the field of Indology and would also serve to recognize the importance of his work in promoting cultural understanding and exchange between India and China. It will also be an inspiration for the Center’s team and an honour for his legacy, and it will bring attention to the centre and its mission, as it is named after a well-known and respected figure in the field of India-China cultural studies.

“XuFancheng Culture Study Center” (Xu-CSC) was officially inaugurated on October 26th, 2020 in presence of the Chinese Ambassador to India H.E Sun Weidong, and Chief Minster of Pondicherry Hon’ Narayanasamy commemorating Prof. XuFancheng’s 111th anniversary and celebrating 70 years of India-China cultural and diplomatic relations.

Our vision is to create a premier institution for the study of India-China culture, serving as a hub for research, scholarship, and dialogue. We aim to provide a platform for scholars, students, and the general public to engage with the diverse cultural traditions of India and China, and to promote mutual understanding and respect between the two nations. We also aim to establish strong partnerships with academic institutions and cultural organizations in India and China, and to become a leading resource for the study of India-China culture in the world.

PROJECT - Library for India-China cultural studies & Information Resource Centre

A project to establish a Library for India-China cultural studies and Information Resource Centre would be an important step in promoting the study and understanding of the cultural heritage of India and China.

The library would be a repository of books, journals, and other materials related to India-China cultural studies, and would serve as a resource for students, scholars, and the general public. The library should have a wide range of materials including books, journals, newspapers, manuscripts, photographs, maps, and other primary sources, that cover topics such as history, literature, religion, art, music, philosophy, and other cultural practices of India and China. The library will also have a digitization program, to make the resources accessible online and to allow users to access the library remotely.

The Information Resource Centre would be a place where users could access online databases, e-books, and other digital resources on India-China cultural studies. It would have computer terminals, internet access and other resources to support research and study.

The library and the Information Resource Centre should be staffed by trained professionals who are knowledgeable in India-China cultural studies and who can provide research assistance and guidance to users.

Goals & Objectives

  • To conduct and promote research on the cultural traditions and history of India and China, with a focus on their similarities and differences.
  • To offer academic courses and programs on India-China culture for students and scholars.
  • To organize and host cultural events and lectures, such as exhibitions, film screenings, and guest speaker events, to provide opportunities for the general public to engage with India-China culture.
  • To establish partnerships with academic institutions and cultural organizations in India and China, to enhance the center’s resources and reach.
  • To promote cultural exchange between India and China, by encouraging the exchange of scholars and students, and organizing cultural exchange programs.
  • To serve as a resource center for the study of India-China culture, providing access to books, journals, and other materials related to India-China cultural studies.
  • To continuously evaluate and improve the center’s operations and offerings to ensure its ongoing success.
  • To create and maintain a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all members of the center’s community, regardless of background or identity.
  • To provide a comprehensive collection of books, journals, and other materials related to India-China cultural studies, that serves as a resource for students, scholars, and the general public.
  • To create a digitization program that makes the resources accessible online and allows users to access the library remotely, and to make the materials available to scholars and students who are not able to visit the library in person.
  • To establish an Information Resource Centre, that provides access to online databases, e-books, and other digital resources on India-China cultural studies.
  • To provide research assistance and guidance to users by trained professionals who are knowledgeable in India-China cultural studies.
  • To provide a space for visiting scholars, students, and researchers to conduct research, and to access the library’s resources and services.
